The lid is decorated with Engraved Flora. bed warmer is a home fireplace/hearth essential during the cruelly cold winter of the early colonial days. Fire logs are placed in the pan and repeatedly placed in between blanket to warm up the bed before sleeping. This one is a highly unusual large example with rarely seen wrought iron handle (they are usually with turned wood handle). It measures approximately 45” long and the pan lid is 13” in diameter. The handle has early hammering sign and a typical early rat tail hook at the end. It is not a later modification since the handle also extend into a large ring that holds the bottom pan. There are crude Hammered nails on this ring that connects the lower brass pan.
The top lid is beautifully decorated with chased or engraved Flora and geometric pattern.
The structure of this bed warmer is very sturdy considering it’s age. The handle is firmly attached. The hinge works as intended. The bottom pan is dented with some small holes. Please check all photos for detailed condition.
Overall, this is a well preserved rarely seen unusual example of early American fireplace hearth tool.
