Navya Nanda on Kolkata rape-murder case: Women deserve better, she deserved better

Actor Amitabh Bachchan’s granddaughter and entrepreneur Navya Naveli Nanda, addressed the deeply disturbing Kolkata rape and murder case, offering her perspective on the societal and systemic failures surrounding such incidents. The young entrepreneur said women in society deserve better.
Navya spoke about the incident at India Today Mumbai Conclave 2024 on Thursday, September 26 during her session titled, ‘Beyond the Legacy: Gen Z for a Just and Equal India.’ She emphasised the need for accountability and the shared responsibility of both men and women in preventing such tragedies.
“I think what happened in Kolkata is not a first. It’s something that we’ve seen happen multiple times. It was outrageous and horrific. We as a country, women, people, and society want law enforcement and protocols, but it is very easy for us to sit and demand things,” Navya said.
Navya also spoke about the need for holding people accountable, “I think we have to be accountable and responsible as members of society. I feel that it is an equal responsibility to create a safe environment for women, not just at work but even at home. As members of society, we should have a part in that. Having said that, strong women deserve better. She deserved better, and I don’t think that anyone or anybody should be able to override it,” she added.
The accused in the rape-murder case of the trainee doctor was arrested a day after the victim’s body was found inside the campus on August 9.
